National & International News :


1. CBDT extends due date for Re - Registration/Approval by Charitable, Religious Trusts till 30th Sept, 2023


The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the due date for furnishing the application by the charitable or religious trusts and institutions for re-registration/approval to September 30, 2023 from November 25, 2022.

- Under Income Tax law, the income of charitable institutions, religious trusts, medical and educational institutions, referred to in sub-clause (iv) or sub-clause (v) or sub-clause (vi) or sub-clause (via) of clause (23C) of section 10 of the Income-tax Act, 1961 or any trust or institution registered under section 12AA or section 12AB of the Act are exempt from tax.

- However, these institutions are required to seek registration from the I-T department.


2. MoCA launches UDAN 5.1 designed for helicopter routes


The Ministry of Civil Aviation(MoCA) launched Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) - Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) 5.1 to enhance connectivity to remote areas of the country and achieve last-mile connectivity through helicopters.

- For the 1st time, the RCS-UDAN scheme is designed specifically for helicopter routes.

- UDAN 5.1 is designed in consultation with all stakeholders including helicopter operators.

About UDAN 5.1 :

- UNDAN 5.1 focuses on 2 emerging phenomena in Indian civil aviation.

- Democratization of air travel with a focus on last-mile connectivity.

Increasing demand for helicopters in aiding tourism.

- The scope of operations for operators has been increased.

- The scheme will now allow routes where either origin or destination is in a priority area. Earlier, both points had to be in the priority area.

- To ensure that flying in helicopters is more affordable for passengers, the airfare caps have been reduced by around 25%.

- To enhance the financial viability for operating the awarded routes, the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) caps for the operators have been increased substantially for both single and twin-engine helicopters.

About UDAN :

Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) is a Regional Connectivity Scheme(RCS) launched on 21st October 2016 by the Ministry of Civil Aviation with an aim to fulfill the aspirations of the common man by following the vision of “Ude Deshka Aam Nagrik” with an enhanced aviation infrastructure and air connectivity in tier II and tier III cities.

- The first flight under UDAN was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 27th April 2017.

3. India’s fish production touches a record 162.48 lakh tons per annum in 2021-22


India’s fish production hit an all-time high of 162.48 lakh tonnes in fiscal year 2021-22, Union minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying Parshottam Rupala said.

- India’s fish production has grown 22-fold since independence, from 7.5 lakh tonne in 1950-51 to a record-breaking 162.48 lakh tonne in 2021-22, reflecting a growth rate of 10.34% compared to the previous year.

- With approximately 8% share in global fish production, India is now the world’s third-largest fish-producing country after China and Indonesia.


4. India's AI Supercomputer 'Airawat' Ranked 75th in Top 500 Global Supercomputing List


On May 24, 2023, the AI Supercomputer 'AIRAWAT' achieved the 75th global ranking in the 61st edition of the Top 500 Global Supercomputing List. This esteemed list was announced at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC 2023) held in Germany.

- Installed at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune, Maharashtra, AIRAWAT, also known as the AI Research Analytics and Knowledge Dissemination Platform, is a remarkable creation under the National Program on AI (NPAI) initiated by the Government of India.

- The top position on the list was secured by the United States (US) Frontier, an HPE Cray EX system. This achievement is significant as it marks the first US system to surpass a performance level of one Exaflop/s (EXA Floating point Operations per Second).

Notes :

(i) The TOP500 list reveals that AMD (Advanced Micro Devices), Intel, and IBM (International Business Machines Corporation) processors are the favored choices for high-performance computing (HPC) systems.

(ii) The majority of entries on the complete TOP500 list are held by China and the United States (US).

(iii) The US has extended its lead on the current list, going from 126 to 150 systems, while China's count has decreased from 162 to 134.

(iv) In terms of continents, Asia boasts the highest representation with 192 machines on the list, followed by North America with 160 systems, and Europe with 133 systems.

(v) Ethernet remains the most prevalent system interconnect, despite a slight decline from 233 machines to 227. Infiniband interconnects come next with 200 machines, followed by Omnipath with 35 machines.

5. Union Ayush Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated PCIM&H ‘e-office’ and online portal


Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, responsible for the Ministry of Ayush and Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, recently paid a visit to the Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy (PCIM&H) in Ghaziabad. During the visit, he inaugurated the "e-Office portal of PCIM&H" as well as an "Online portal."

- The Online portal has been established to facilitate the sale of softcopies of pharmacopoeial monographs. This initiative aims to ensure easy access to pharmacopoeia monographs for stakeholders worldwide, promoting a hassle-free dissemination of information. Dr. Kousthubha Upadhyaya, Adviser (Ayurveda) at the Ministry of Ayush, and Dr. Raman Mohan Singh, Director of PCIM&H, accompanied Sarbananda Sonowal during his visit to the PCIM&H facility.

- PCIM&H, under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Ayush, actively focuses on the standardization and quality control of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Homeopathy (ASU&H) drugs. The commission plays a crucial role in publishing these standards in the form of pharmacopoeias.


6. UP govt inaugurated an online education programme " Pahal " for rural area students


On May 15 2023, Durga Shanker Mishra, Chief Secretary of the Government of Uttar Pradesh (UP) inaugurated an online rural education programme ‘Pahal’ at Government UP Sainik Inter College, Sarojini Nagar in Lucknow, UP.

- The programme Pahal has been developed by the Department of secondary education in collaboration with IIT (Indian Institutes of Technology) Kanpur.

- Under this programme, free online education has been initially provided at 10 government secondary schools, and will soon be extended to 40,000 schools in UP.


7. Puducherry & L&T Engineering signed a MoU to develop Tourist Spots under Centre’s SD 2.0


On May 22, 2023, the Territorial administration of Puducherry entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Engineering Limited. The purpose of this agreement is to collaborate on the preparation of a concept paper, conduct consultations with stakeholders, and generate a detailed report for the development of tourism infrastructure in Puducherry and Karaikal.

- This MoU was signed in accordance with the inclusion of Puducherry and Karaikal regions under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme (SD2.0) initiated by the Government of India (GoI). L&T Engineering Limited has been appointed as the project management consultant by the GoI for the implementation of the scheme in Puducherry and Karaikal.

- As part of the Swadesh Darshan scheme 2.0, each region is set to receive approximately Rs 80 crore in financial assistance. These funds will be utilized to develop and enhance significant heritage and culturally important sites, transforming them into prominent tourist destinations. The allocated funds will be used for the improvement of heritage sites, conservation of water bodies, and provision of essential civic amenities at these tourist spots.


8. Sourav Ganguly appointed Brand Ambassador of Tripura Tourism


On May 23, 2023, Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of the Indian cricket team and the 35th President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was appointed as the brand ambassador of Tripura tourism.

- The announcement came following a meeting between Tripura's Minister of Tourism, Sushanta Chowdhury, the Chairman of Tripura Tourism Development Corporation Limited (TTDCL), and Sourav Ganguly at his residence in Kolkata, West Bengal. During the meeting, the proposal was discussed, leading to Ganguly's appointment as the brand ambassador of Tripura tourism.

- In addition to this role, Sourav Ganguly has recently endorsed various brands, including Fortune Rice Bran Oil, My11Circle, and Ajanta Shoes. He has also been associated with other renowned brands such as Puma, Classplus, Hero Honda, among many others.

9. PM Modi Laid Foundation Stone for 'Little India' gateway


On May 23, 2023, PM Narendra Modi and Australian PM Anthony Albanese jointly laid the foundation stone of the 'Little India' gateway to be built in Harris Park in Western Sydney as a symbol of the friendship between the two nations and to recognise the diaspora's immense contribution.

- Harris Park is a hub in Western Sydney where the Indian community celebrates festivals and events such as Diwali and Australia Day.

- A street in Western Sydney, Australia was officially renamed as "Little India" by PM Narendra Modi.

10. PM Modi Conferred with Highest Civilian Award in Fiji


On May 22, 2023, in a special ceremony at the Government House, Sir Bob Dadae, Governor-General of Papua New Guinea, conferred Prime Minister Modi with the "Grand Companion of the Order of Logohu (GCL)", the highest civilian award in Fiji, in recognition of his global leadership.

- The recipients of the award are titled "Chief". The medallion was presented to PM Modi in recognition of his global leadership, a rare honour for a non-Fijian.


11. MP Modi unveiled a 42-inch tall bronze bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Hiroshima, Japan


On May 20, 2023, Prime Minister Modi unveiled a 42-inch tall bronze bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Hiroshima, Japan. The Government of India presented this bust to the city of Hiroshima as a gesture of friendship and goodwill between India and Japan.

- Renowned sculptor Shri Ram Vanji Sutar, a recipient of the Padma Bhushan award, crafted the Mahatma Gandhi bust. It has been strategically placed near the Motoyasu River, in close proximity to the iconic A-Bomb Dome, as a symbol of solidarity for peace and non-violence.

- The Hiroshima Peace Memorial, also known as the Genbaku Dome or A-Bomb Dome, is the sole structure that survived the atomic bombing on August 6, 1945. It stands as a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of nuclear warfare and a beacon of hope for global peace.

- In December 1996, the A-Bomb Dome was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List under the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

12. India Lost Over 1.3 Lakh Lives In Disasters Linked To  Extreme Weather, Climate Change In 50 Years : WMO


According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN), India has witnessed 573 disasters related to extreme weather, climate, and water events between 1970 and 2021.

- These disasters resulted in 1,38,377 deaths and caused economic losses amounting to USD 18.3 billion.

- Around 11,778 disasters were reported across the globe between 1970 and 2021. These disasters caused 20,87,229 deaths and USD 4.3 trillion in economic losses.

Key Points about Asia :

- Around 3612 disasters attributed to weather, climate and water extremes were reported between 1970 and 2021.

- This resulted in 984263 deaths in Asia, around 47% of all reported deaths worldwide and incurred USD 1.4 trillion in economic losses which is around 33% of all reported losses worldwide.

- Bangladesh has the highest death toll in Asia with 520758 deaths due to 281 events.


13. EPFO Adds 13.4 Lakh Members in March, 1.39 Crore In 2022-23


The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has added 1.39 crore members during the financial year 2022-23.

- Provisional payroll data of EPFO highlights that it added over 13 lakh members in March 2023.

- According to the Ministry of Labor and Employment, out of the 13.40 lakh members added during March, over seven lakh new members have come under the EPFO ambit for the first time.

- Among newly joined members, the highest enrollment is in the age group of 18 to 21 years with 2.35 lakh members, followed by about two lakh members in the age group of 22 to 25 years.


Banking & Finance News :


1. RBI Board approved Transfer of Rs. 87,416 Crore as Surplus to Government


The board of the Reserve Bank of India approved the transfer of Rs. 87,416 crore as surplus to the Government for the year 2022-2023 at the 602nd meeting of the RBI’s Central Board of Directors, Chaired by Governor Shaktikanta Das.

- It also decided to raise the contingency risk buffer to 6% from 5.5%.

- In the financial year (FY) 2021-2022, the RBI transferred Rs. 30,307 crore to the government.


2. Public Sector Banks' total profit reaches Rs. 1,04,649 cr in FY23


The 12 Public Sector Banks' (PSBs) cumulative profit crossed the Rs. 1 lakh crore mark in FY23 by touching Rs 1,04,649 crore.

- They witnessed a 57% increase in total profit compared to Rs. 66,539.98 crore earned in FY22.

- In the March 2023 quarter, the PSBs’ profit cumulatively increased more than 95% to Rs. 34,483 crore as compared to Rs. 17,666 crore in March 2022.

Data regarding profits in percentage terms :

In percentage terms, Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) had the highest net profit growth with 126% to Rs. 2,602 crore.

- It is followed by UCO Bank with a 100% rise to Rs 1,862 crore, and Bank of Baroda with a 94% increase to Rs 14,110 crore.

Data regarding profits in absolute terms :

In absolute terms, State Bank of India (SBI) has reported an annual

profit of Rs. 50,232 crore in 2022-23, showing an increase of 59%

over FY22.

- Except for the Punjab National Bank, other PSBs have reported impressive annual increases in their profit after tax. PNB posted a 27% decline in annual net profit from Rs 3,457 crore in 2021-22 to Rs. 2,507 crore in March 2023.


3. SBI General launches " Surety Bond Bima " for Infrastructure Projects


On May 23, 2023, SBI General Insurance (SBIG), the non-life insurance division of State Bank of India (SBI), introduced the 'General Surety Bond Bima (Conditional & Unconditional)' insurance product specifically designed for infrastructure projects.

- This insurance product serves as a protective measure, offering coverage for infrastructure projects and safeguarding both the contractor and the principal party involved in awarding the contract.

- The objective of this insurance offering is to provide protection against any violations of terms and conditions by contractors, whether during the bidding phase or the project's execution stage.

- The Surety Bond Insurance is available in two variants : Conditional and Unconditional

(i) Under the conditional bond, a predetermined amount is paid to the beneficiary upon fulfilling specific conditions mentioned in the policy.

(ii) The unconditional bond, on the other hand, allows the beneficiary to claim the funds with minimal or no conditions attached.

4. Plotch, IDFC FIRST Bank Collaborates and Launches ONDC Focused Payment Solution Nodepe


In collaboration with IDFC FIRST Bank Limited, Plotch, a SaaS (Software as a Service) firm, has introduced NodePe, a payment solution focused on the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).

Here are the key details :

- NodePe facilitates payment routing between buyer and seller apps based on transaction-level contracts established by network participants.

- These contracts encompass various aspects such as payment settlement amount, duration, and bank details. NodePe also assists in payment reconciliation.

- Currently, NodePe plans to utilize the NOCS (Network of Networks for Consumer Services) platform provided by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) for settlement between parties. It enables the company to instantly settle funds to sellers upon product delivery by the seller.

- In April 2023, NPCI Bharat BillPay Ltd (NBBL), a subsidiary of NPCI, launched the NOCS platform to provide reconciliation and settlement services for transactions conducted on the ONDC network.

5. Axis Bank launches Digital Onboarding platform ‘Sarathi’ for POS Terminals

6. CCAvenues’PayPal integration to offer merchants in Middle East global payment acceptance platform


CCAvenue, a payments aggregator in the Middle East and a part of the Infibeam Avenues group, has partnered with PayPal to provide global payment acceptance solutions for businesses in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

- This means, PayPal will now be available as an additional option on CCAvenue, allowing businesses in the MENA region to settle and receive payments from their cross-border customers and vendors.

- This will eliminate the need of having a US bank account to access their funds.


7. PPBL gets RBI approval to Re-Appoint Vijay Shekhar Sharma as Part-Time Chairman for 1 Year


Paytm Payments Bank Limited (PPBL), a part of Paytm, received approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the re-appointment of Vijay Shekhar Sharma as part-time Chairman of PPBL for a period of 1 year starting from 23rd May 2023. This mark’s his 3rd term as the chairman of PPBL.

-  Noida (Uttar Pradesh)-based One97 Communications Limited (OCL), the parent entity Paytm, holds a 49% stake in PPBL.

- Vijay Shekhar Sharma holds the rest of the stake (51%) in PPBL.


8. IDBI Bank board appoints Jayakumar S. Pillai as Deputy Managing Director


On May 22, 2023, the Board of Directors of Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI) Bank Limited approved the appointment of Jayakumar S. Pillai as Deputy Managing Director (DMD) on the Board of IDBI. This appointment is valid for a period of 3 years, starting from the date of his assumption of charge, as specified in the approval received from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Noteable points :

- IDBI Bank has two DMD positions, with Suresh Khatanhar currently holding one of the positions. The other DMD, Samuel Joseph Jebaraj, was transferred to the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) in April 2023, where he serves as DMD (Lending & Project Finance).

1. World Thyroid Day - 25th May, 2023




World Thyroid Day is annually observed across the globe on 25th May to create awareness about the importance of the thyroid gland, a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the front of your neck and to educate the general public about thyroid diseases and their symptoms.

- The blue and blue paisley print ribbons are used as the awareness ribbon to support awareness for Thyroid diseases.

World Thyroid Day (WTD) was founded by the European Thyroid Association (ETA) in 2008.

- In 2010, the day was endorsed by the four sister societies -ETA, American Thyroid Association, Latin American Thyroid Society (LATS) and the Asia and Oceania Thyroid Association (AOTA) at the International Thyroid Congress(ITC) in Paris, France.

2. International Missing Children's Day - 25th May,2023




International Missing Children's Day (IMCD) is annually observed across the globe on May 25 to commemorate missing children and generate awareness about the kidnappings of children.

The day is widely referred to with a forget-me-not flower as its emblem.

- IMCD was initiated in 1983 by then-USA (United States of America) President Ronald Reagan as National Missing Children’s Day.

- The 1st ever International Missing Children’s Day was formally recognised on 25th May 2001.

Indian Laws Against Child Abduction :

- On 30th March 2009, the Law Commission of India presented the 218th Report titled “Need to Consent to The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction 1980”.

- The Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD) has been implementing a Centrally Sponsored Scheme, namely the Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS) since 2009.

- National Informatics Centre (NIC) developed the TrackChild Portal, designed and developed sticking to the guidelines provided in the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000 and Model Rules 2007.
