National & International News :


1. PM Narendra Modi flags off Northeast's first Vande Bharat Express


On May 29, 2023, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi virtually flagged off northeast region’s first Vande Bharat Express which will connect Guwahati (Assam) with New Jalpaiguri (West Bengal) within five-and-a-half hours.

- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also attended the flagging off ceremony of  Vande Bharat Express which held held at Guwahati Railway Station.

- It will provide connectivity to Maa Kamakhya Temple, Kaziranga, Manas National Park, and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and also will enhance travel and tourism in Shillong, Cherrapunji in Meghalaya and Tawang and Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh.


2. Unemployment declines further to 6.8% in Q4FY23 : 18th Quarterly PLFS by NSO 


On May 29, 2023, the 18th quarterly Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) bulletin for January-March 2023 (Q4FY23) was released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).

According to the report, India's urban unemployment rate (UR) in Current Weekly Status (CWS) terms, for individuals aged 15 years and above, decreased to 6.8% during Q4FY23, down from 7.2% in Q3FY23. In comparison, the unemployment rate was 8.2% during January-March 2022.

During Q4FY23, a total of 5,726 First Stage Units (FSUs) - Urban Frame Survey blocks, were surveyed. The survey covered 44,982 urban households and 1,72,089 individuals in urban areas.


Key Figures representing Persons of 15 years and above in Urban Areas in Q4FY23 :

(i) The urban unemployment rate (UR) in CWS among the male population declined to 6% compared to 6.5% in Q3FY23.

(ii) The urban unemployment rate (UR) in CWS among females also saw a decline during Q4FY23, decreasing to 9.2% from 9.6% in Q3FY23. The rate was 10.1% during January-March 2022.

(iii) Himachal Pradesh (HP) had the highest unemployment rate (UR) among all age groups, standing at 15.2%. Chhattisgarh followed at 12.5% in the second position, and Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) at 12.4% in the third position.

(iv) The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) in CWS for males increased slightly to 73.5% from 73.3% in Q3FY23. LFPR in CWS for females also saw a slight increase, rising to 22.7% from 22.3% in Q3FY23. At the all India level, LFPR in CWS was 48.5%, up from 48.2% in Q3FY23.

(v) The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) in CWS for males increased to 69.1% compared to 68.6% in Q3FY23. The WPR in CWS for females also experienced a slight increase, reaching 20.6% from 20.2% in Q3FY23. At the all India level, the WPR in CWS was 45.2%, up from 44.7% in Q3FY23.


About Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) :

It was launched in 2017 by NSO to serves the following two purposes:

(i) To estimate the key employment and unemployment indicators (viz. Worker Population Ratio, Labour Force Participation Rate, Unemployment Rate) in the short time interval of three months (quarterly) for the urban areas only in the ‘Current Weekly Status’ (CWS).

(ii) To estimate employment and unemployment indicators in both ‘Usual Status’ (ps+ss) and CWS in both rural and urban areas annually.


3. CAG Murmu re-elected as external auditor of WHO for 4-year term


On May 29, 2023, Comptroller and Auditor General of India Girish Chandra Murmu was re-elected as the external auditor of the World Health Organization (WHO) for a four-year term from 2024 to 2027.

- He has been serving as the external auditor of WHO since 2020.

- The election was held on May 29, 2023 in the 76th World Health Assembly in Geneva, He got a majority (114 out of 156 votes) against Tanzania (42 votes). Seventy-nine votes were required for the majority.

About WHO’s External Auditor : 

The WHO External Auditor is appointed by and reports to the Health Assembly. The Auditor General of India served as the WHO's External Auditor from 2020 to 2023, succeeding the Auditor General of the Republic of the Philippines who served from 2012 to 2019. The term of office is 4 years, extendable once for an additional 4 years. The External Auditor reviews and issues an annual report on the Audited Financial Statements to the Health Assembly.

Girish Chandra Murmu, the 14th Comptroller and Auditor General of India, assumed office on August 8, 2020. He previously served as the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir from 2019 to 2020. Murmu is currently the external auditor for several organizations, including the Food and Agriculture Organization, International Atomic Energy Agency, International Labour Organisation, and Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. He is a Member of the United Nations Panel of External Auditors and serves on the Governing Boards of INTOSAI and ASOSAI.

4. Miniopetrus Srinii : New Bat Species discovered in Karnataka


Dr. Bhargavi Srinivasulu, zoologist from Osmania University(OU)(Hyderabad, Telangana), along with her son, Aditya Srinivasulu, discovered a new species of bat named “Miniopetrus Srinii” or Srini’s Bent-winged Bat, from a subterranean cave(in Western Ghats) at Makuta in Kodagu district of Karnataka.

- The new species is named in honour of Dr Bhargavi’s husband, Prof C Srinivasulu, a bat biologist at OU.

- The discovery is published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal “Zootaxa”.


5. Bola Ahmed Tinubu sworn in as the New President of Nigeria and Kashim Shettima as VP


On May 29 2023, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, 71, the former governor of Lagos (Nigeria), was sworn in as the 16th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

- Olukayode Ariwoola, Chief Justice of Nigeria, administered the oath of office to Bola Ahmed Tinubu at a ceremony held in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria.

- He succeeds Muhammadu Buhari, who was ineligible to run again after 2 four-year terms that began in 2015.

- He is also the 5th President of Nigeria since the return of democracy in 1999. 

- Kashim Shettima, a Nigerian Politician, has been appointed as the Vice-President of Nigeria.

6. 76th Cannes Film Festival : Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall won the Palme d’Or


The 76th annual Cannes International Film Festival was held from May 16 to 27 2023 in Cannes, France. French film director Justine Triet’s French courtroom thriller ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ has won the top award of the 2023 – ‘Palme d’Or’ for best feature film.

- Justine Triet is the third woman director to win Cannes’ top honour (the second in three years), following Julia Ducournau, who received the Palme d’Or award for Titane in 2021. Jane Campion was the first-ever female Palme d’Or winner in 1993 for ‘The Piano’.


7. IIFA 2023 : Hrithik Roshan and Alia Bhatt won the Best Actor awards


The 23rd edition of NEXA International Indian Film Academy (IIFA 2023) Awards was held on 26th & 27th May 2023 in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

- Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan won Best Actor in a Leading Role (male) for his performance in Vikram Vedha and Alia Bhatt won Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female) for her role in Gangubai Kathiawadi.

Indian Shutler Prannoy Haseena Sunil Kumar (HS Prannoy) (World no 9) won the Men’s Singles Title at the Perodua Malaysia Masters 2023 by defeating China’s Weng Hong Yang.

Economy News :


1. Goldman Sachs hikes India’s 2023 GDP forecast to 6.3%


Goldman Sachs increased the Indian economic growth forecast by 30 basis points to 6.3% year-on-year (y-o-

y) for calendar year 2023 from its earlier forecast of 6%, citing a boost in net exports.

-  It has pegged GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth for the Jan-March 2023 quarter at 4.9%, 6.5% 

for April-June 2023, 5.9% for July-September 2023 and 8.1% for October-December 2023.


Banking & Finance News :


1. Bank of Maharashtra top performer in NPA management during FY23


As per the data of banks, Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) has emerged as the best bank as far as management of bad loans is concerned with its net Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) decreased to 0.25% during FY23.

- This is the lowest ratio among all banks having total business above Rs 3 lakh crore including both Private Sectors Banks and Public Sector Banks (PSBs).

- With respect to NPAs, BoM is followed by the HDFC Bank with net NPA falling to 0.27% at 2nd spot and Kotak Mahindra Bank (KMB) at 3rd spot with 0.37% of net advances.

- On the PSB side, BoM was followed by the State Bank of India (SBI) with net NPAs falling to 0.67% and Bank of Baroda (BoB) at 0.89% at the end of March 2023.

Important Points :

(i) Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) achieved the highest growth in profitability, with a bottom-line increase of nearly 126% to Rs 2,602 crore during FY23.

(ii) BoM maintained its top position in garnering low-cost Current Account and Savings Account (CASA) deposits, with a percentage of 53.38%. Following closely behind are IDBI Bank at 53.02% and KMB at 52.83%.

(iii) BoM demonstrated the highest total business growth at 21.2%, reaching Rs 4,09,202 crore. Bank of Baroda (BoB) followed with a growth rate of 14.3% (Rs 18,42,935 crore) at the end of FY23.

(iv) BoM exhibited the highest growth in Retail-Agriculture-MSME (RAM) loans, with a growth rate of 24.06%. Punjab National Bank (PNB) came next with a growth rate of 20.85%, followed by Punjab & Sind Bank at 20.70% on an annual basis.

(v) BoM boasts the highest Provision Coverage Ratio at 98.28%, followed by UCO Bank at 94.50% and Indian Bank at 93.82%.

(vi) Among public sector banks (PSBs), BoM has the highest Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) at 18.14%, followed by Punjab & Sind Bank at 17.10% and Canara Bank at 16.68% as of March 31, 2023.

(vii) BoM recorded a 29.4% increase in gross advances or loan growth on an annual basis, reaching Rs 1,75,120 crore as of March 2023. Indian Overseas Bank and UCO Bank followed with growth rates of 21.2% and 20.6%, respectively. In absolute terms, State Bank of India (SBI) had the highest at Rs 27,76,802 crore, reflecting a 15.38% increase.

(viii) BoM experienced a 15.7% rise in deposit growth, mobilizing Rs 2,34,083 crore by the end of March 2023. Bank of Baroda secured the second position with a 13% growth in deposits (Rs 10,47,375 crore), while Punjab National Bank (PNB) recorded an 11.26% increase, reaching Rs 12,51,708 crore.

(ix) In terms of deposit growth rate, HDFC Bank held the first position with 20.80%, followed by Federal Bank with a 17% rise and KMB with a 16.49% rise.

Note : All the 12 PSBs together recorded 57% jump in net profit at Rs 1,04,649 crore in FY23, according to published yearly numbers of PSBs.

2. ICICI Bank To Raise Stake In ICICI Lombard General Insurance By Up To 4%


The board of directors of the ICICI Bank has decided to raise its stake in ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company (ILGIC) by an additional 4% in the next 16 months and make ILGIC as a subsidiary of ICICI Bank.

- ICICI Bank already holds a 48.02% stake in ICICI Lombard and plans to acquire at least 2.5% before 9th September 2024.

- The board of ICICI Bank approved an increase in shareholding of ILGIC, as permissible under applicable law, to ensure compliance with Section 19(2) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 make the ILGIC, a subsidiary of the ICICI Bank, subject to receipt of necessary regulatory approval.

On Sunday  morning - 28th May , Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the new Parliament building. He was attired in traditional clothing as he entered the Parliament premises through Gate No. 1, where Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla warmly welcomed him.

Accompanied by Vedic chants performed by priests from Karnataka's Shringeri Math, the Prime Minister conducted a "Ganapati Homam" to seek divine blessings for the inauguration of the new Parliament building. With great reverence, Mr. Modi prostrated before the sacred "Sengol" and sought blessings from esteemed priests representing various adheenams in Tamil Nadu, holding a holy sceptre in his hand.

In a grand procession filled with the harmonious melodies of "nadaswaram" and the recitation of Vedic mantras, Prime Minister Modi carried the revered "Sengol" to the new Parliament building. He placed it in a designated enclosure on the right side of the Speaker's chair in the Lok Sabha chamber.

The event witnessed the presence of Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, S. Jaishankar, and Jitendra Singh, as well as Chief Ministers from several states and the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), J.P. Nadda.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister expressed his appreciation by honoring some of the workers who played pivotal roles in the construction of the new Parliament building.

PM Modi officially opened the new Parliament building.

- On that day PM Modi installed ‘Sengol’.

- Modi placed the “Sengol” in a dedicated enclosure on the right side of the Speaker’s chair in the Lok Sabha chamber.

- Sengol was a symbol of rule in the ancient Tamil kingdom.

- The Sengol was kept at the Nehru Gallery of the Allahabad Museum.

- It is a scepter made of gold and silver and is decorated with many precious stones.

- The Sengol is 5 feet long and carries a golden orb at the top.

- The orb has a carving of Nandi, the bull that is precious to Lord Shiva.

- The Sengol is a powerful symbol of the Chola Kings authority and their commitment to justice.

- ‘Sengol’ was 1st handed over by Lord Mountbatten to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on August 14, 1947, , as a symbol of the transfer of power, according to the government.

1. Atal Bhujal Yojana Water Scheme extended for another 2 years, beyond 2025


On May 26 2023, the National Level Steering Committee (NLSC) at its fourth meeting held in New Delhi, Delhi has made a decision for the continuation of the Atal Bhujal Yojana (Atal Jal), India's Central Sector water conservation Scheme for an additional two years beyond its original 2025 end date.

- The 2 year extension aims to compensate for implementation delays due to covid-19 and to further community behaviour change towards conservation and smart water management.

- The Atal Bhujal Yojana Scheme is for facilitating sustainable ground water management since April 2020, under the Department of Water Resources (DoWR), River Development (RD) and Ganga Rejuvenation (GR), Ministry of Jal Shakti.

Atal Bhujal Yojana : A Comprehensive Overview

Atal Bhujal Yojana aims to demonstrate sustainable groundwater management led by communities through the implementation of appropriate investments and management actions. This initiative brings together various central and state schemes, fostering convergence to achieve the desired outcomes.

- The scheme has a total outlay of Rs. 6000 crores, with Rs. 3000 crores secured as a loan from the World Bank through the Program for Results (PforR) lending instrument. Additionally, the Government of India (GoI) will contribute Rs. 3000 crores as a matching amount.

- Atal Bhujal Yojana comprises two key components :

(i) Incentive Component: This component incentivizes states to adopt improved groundwater management practices. States that demonstrate progress in this area can receive additional funding incentives.

(ii) Institutional Strengthening and Capacity Building Component: This component focuses on enhancing the capacity and capabilities of relevant line departments, promoting effective collaboration and resource utilization. It aims to implement Water Security Plans (WSPs) in a coordinated manner.

- The benefits of Atal Bhujal Yojana are as follows :

- The scheme encourages the adoption of innovative irrigation techniques to enhance water efficiency and promote sustainable groundwater management.

- It facilitates collaboration among line departments to maximize the effectiveness of implementing Water Security Plans.

- The scheme aims to expand the use of efficient water techniques, such as drip irrigation and crop diversification, in approximately 4.5 lakh hectares of irrigated area.

- Performance will be measured through Disbursement Linked Indicators, and states meeting targets may receive additional funding incentives.

- Atal Bhujal Yojana focuses on community-led initiatives, efficient water usage, stakeholder collaboration, and capacity building for long-term groundwater resource viability in India.


2. Uber partners with GeM portal to offer taxi services to govt offices, agencies, PSUs at fixed price


Uber has joined hands with public procurement portal Government e-Marketplace (GeM) to provide taxi services to Govt offices, Govt agencies, and Public Sector Units (PSUs) on a pilot basis.

- Under this, Uber will provide the cab  service at a fixed price with zero cancellation charges and no surge pricing.

- Reason of collaboration : The demand for taxi services is on the rise within the government, leading to substantial expenditures. However, utilizing this service can result in significant savings for government departments.

- Cab and taxi services is the second highest category of services at the GeM portal, which are in demand by the government department and ministries.

- An authorised person in each ministry or department can add riders/officials, who will be allowed to book the service through the Uber app from their mobiles. After availing the service, the bill will directly go to the department 

- Authorised official can add or delete the name of riders as per the requirements

- It will be a cashless/cardless ride of the officials; additional vehicle categories for government riders have been added — GeM Yatraa Hatch, GeM Yatraa Sedan; and there will be hourly rental for multiple-stops

GeM, launched in 2016 by the Ministry of Commerce, revolutionizes the procurement process for central ministries and departments by introducing transparency. This platform, Government e-Marketplace (GeM), has witnessed significant growth and now serves as a trusted avenue for buying goods and services.

- GeM is a robust platform with a vast network of participants, including over 63,000 government buyer organizations and more than 62 lakh sellers and service providers.

3. Mukesh Ambani, CMD of Reliance Industries appointed as member of Advisory Committee of COP28


On May 26 2023, Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Reliance Industries has been appointed as a member of the Advisory Committee to the President of the 28th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

-  Mukesh Ambani is the only Indian, other than Sunita Narain, Director General, Centre for Science and Environment, on the Advisory Committee to the President of COP28.

4. Praveen Kumar Srivastava appointed as Central Vigilance Commissioner


Praveen Kumar Srivastava (PK Srivastava) has been appointed as the Central Vigilance Commissioner, heading the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), the anti-corruption watchdog.

On May 29, 2023, PK Srivastava took the oath of office as the Central Vigilance Commissioner at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, administered by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu. 5. Parminder Chopra to Become 1st Woman CMD of Power Finance Corporation


Parminder Chopra is set to become the first woman Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the Power Finance Corporation (PFC), India’s largest non-banking financial company (NBFC) and a Central Public Sector Undertaking(PSU) under the Ministry of Power.

- The Public Sector Enterprise Board (PESB) has recommended Parminder Chopra for the role of CMD of PFC.

- She will succeed Ravinder Singh Dhillon, who is set to retire on 31st May 2023.

- Chopra has over 35 years of experience in the power sector, including at the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation of India (NHPC) and the Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL).

- She has been serving as a Director (Finance) of PFC since July 2020.


6. Dr. Vijay Darda’s New Book, ‘RINGSIDE,” to be Released by Shashi Tharoor

7. ISRO's GSLV-F12 successfully places navigation satellite NVS-01 into Orbit


On May 29, 2023, the Indian Space Research Organisation (IRSO) has successfully launched the  GSLV-F12/NVS-01 mission and placed a second generation Navigation Satellite, NVS-01,into geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO).

Key notes :

- A GSLV rocket successfully launched the NVS-01 satellite from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR in Sriharikota, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

- NVS-01 aims to enhance Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) services.

- The satellite was deployed into the intended Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) at an altitude of about 251 km.

- It carries navigation payloads for L1, L5, and S bands, including an indigenously developed rubidium atomic clock.

- NavIC signals provide accurate user positioning within 20 meters and precise timing within 50 nanoseconds.

- The NVS-01 satellite is expected to operate for approximately 12 years, contributing to India's navigation capabilities and space technology advancements.

8. TCS-led Consortium Bags Rs. 15,000 crore BSNL Contract for 4G Deployment


The Tata Consultancy Service Limited (TCS)-led consortium has received an advance purchase order worth Rs. 15,000 crore from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), a central public sector undertaking (PSU) under the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, for the deployment of a 4G network across India.

- The consortium composed of Tejas Network Ltd., C-DOT, and ITI Ltd. has secured the bid for BSNL's nationwide 4G project. TCS will receive around 75% of the deal value. Tejas Networks, a domestic gear company under the Tata Group, will provide and maintain RAN equipment.


9. Rocket Lab launches 2nd pair of CubeSats for NASA’s TROPICS mission


Rocket Lab USA Inc.'s Electron rocket launched the final pair of CubeSats for NASA's TROPICS mission on May 25, 2023, from New Zealand.

- The CubeSats will collect frequent tropical storm data to enhance tropical cyclone forecasts.

- The launch was named 'Coming To A Storm Near You'.

- This is Rocket Lab's 37th Electron launch, bringing the total number of satellites launched to 163.

- It is the second TROPICS launch for NASA, following the previous launch on May 7, 2023.

- TROPICS aims to study tropical cyclones and improve hurricane and typhoon forecasting.

- The four CubeSats are part of NASA's Earth System Science Pathfinder Program and were launched into a specific orbit.

- TROPICS will monitor tropical cyclone formation, evolution, and intensity with near-hourly data updates.

- It will observe temperature, precipitation, water vapor, and cloud ice more frequently to enhance storm modeling and prediction.


10. Princess Sophia Duleep Singh London home honoured with Commemorative Blue Plaque


Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, an Indian suffragette, Red Cross nurse, and critic of British rule, was honored with a commemorative Blue Plaque on May 26, 2023, in London, UK.

1. SEBI sets up Intermediary Advisory Committee Chaired by former SEBI ED S. Ravindran


On May 25, 2023, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) constituted a 21-member Intermediary Advisory Committee chaired by the former SEBI executive director (ED) S Ravindran.

- The committee will advise SEBI on changes in legal framework and increasing transparency in the functioning of market intermediaries like stock exchanges, depository participants, clearing corporations, among others.

Note that - S Ravindran has previously held important roles within SEBI, including overseeing the Corporation Finance Department, as well as departments related to investment management and foreign institutional investors and custodians.

2. RBI approves the voluntary amalgamation of Maratha Co-op Bank with Cosmos Co-operative Bank


On May 26, 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved the merger of Maratha Sahakari Bank Ltd., Mumbai with the Cosmos Co-operative Bank Ltd, Pune. This was done through a Voluntary scheme of amalgamation starting from May 29, 2023, under the powers conferred by the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

As per the scheme, all seven branches of Maratha Sahakari Bank Ltd. will now operate as branches of The Cosmos Co-operative Bank Limited.

- Maratha Sahakari Bank was established in 1946 and has seven branches in Mumbai. It was placed under RBI's Directions under Section 35 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, on August 31, 2016. The Directions were extended several times, with the final extension granted until March 31, 2023, as of February 28, 2023.

As of March 31, 2022, Maratha Sahakari Bank had a net profit of Rs 3.81 crore in FY22 but had accumulated losses of Rs 52.43 crore.

On the other hand, as of March 2022, the Cosmos Co-operative Bank operated as a multi-state urban co-operative bank with 140 branches across seven states. It recorded deposits totaling Rs 16,522 crore and advances amounting to Rs 12,293 crore.

3. Indian Bank Empanelled as Clearing & Settlement Bank with ICCL


On May 27, 2023, Indian Bank and Indian Clearing Corporation Limited (ICCL) signed an agreement, making Indian Bank the clearing and settlement bank for BSE members.

- The agreement was exchanged between Mahesh Kumar Bajaj, executive director of Indian Bank, and Devika Shah, MD and CEO of ICCL.

- Clearing members can now open settlement accounts with Indian Bank for fund settlement in the equity derivatives segment.

- Indian Bank also introduced the electronic term deposit receipt (e-TDR) product, allowing online transmission of fixed term receipts (FDR) and margin with ICCL on behalf of clearing members. The dedicated Fort Mumbai branch will handle these transactions.


4. Srikrishnan Hari Hara Sarma appointed as MD & CEO of Karnataka Bank

1. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya Launched National Medical Devices Policy, 2023 & Other Initiatives


On May 26, 2023, the National Medical Devices Policy, 2023, was unveiled and the Export Promotion Council for Medical Devices was launched by Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare. This significant announcement took place during the inauguration of the 8th International Conference on Pharma and Medical Device Sector.

- In addition to these initiatives, Mansukh Mandaviya also introduced a scheme titled 'Assistance for Medical Devices clusters for Common Facilities (AMD-CF).' This scheme aims to establish and enhance common infrastructure facilities within medical devices clusters, as well as strengthen testing facilities for medical devices.

- Here are some key points related to the event :

(i) On May 26, 2023, Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated the 8th International Conference on Pharma and Medical Device Sector.

(ii) The conference was jointly organized by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). Its purpose was to promote India as a manufacturing hub for high-quality medical products in the pharmaceutical and medical device sector.

2. PM Modi flags off Uttarakhand’s 1st Vande Bharat train : Dehradun-Delhi 


Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi virtually flagged off Uttarakhand’s 1st semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Train connecting Dehradun with Delhi.

- The inaugural run of the train connects Dehradun to Delhi's Anand Vihar terminal.

- This will be the 6th Vande Bharat train connecting Delhi from a different state. This also marks the 18th Vande Bharat train in India.

- The regular operations for the Delhi-Dehradun Vande Bharat Express will start on 29 May. The train will operate on all days of the week, except Wednesdays. This will reduce the journey time between Dehradun and Delhi to 4 hours 30 min. At present, the Shatabdi Express takes 6 hours and 10 minutes to complete the journey.

3. MoRD Minister Giriraj Singh launches SAMARTH campaign to Promote Digital Transactions at Gram Panchayat Level


The launch of the 'SAMARTH' campaign took place on May 25, 2023, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (UP). Giriraj Singh, the Union Minister of Rural Development (MoRD), introduced this campaign as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, aiming to promote digital transactions in 50,000 Gram Panchayats.

- The campaign had already commenced on February 1, 2023, initiated by the Ministry of Rural Development, and it will continue until August 15, 2023. The event in Lucknow was graced by the presence of Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of UP.

- The primary objective of the campaign is to encourage digital transactions in rural areas, with a particular focus on empowering women.

- Here are some key points related to the campaign :

(i) In Uttar Pradesh, the BC (Banking Correspondent) Sakhis played a vital role in driving digital transformation. They facilitated over 5 crore 57 lakh transactions, helping rural communities access and encash government DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) funds worth over Rs 75,000 crore. It is noteworthy that the BC Sakhi Yojana was launched in May 2020 by the Chief Minister of UP to generate employment opportunities for women in the state. Through this scheme, BC Sakhis are deployed in rural areas, eliminating the need for residents to travel to banks as the Sakhis deliver money directly to their doorstep.

(ii) The Non-Performing Assets (NPA) of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have significantly decreased from 9.58% in 2013 to below 2% presently.


4. GCC’s Araku Coffee from Andhra Pradesh gets Organic Certificate


The Girijan Cooperative Corporation (GCC) has received the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) certificate for the coffee and pepper GCC purchases from the tribal coffee farmers of the Chintapalli division, Andhra Pradesh(AP).

- The certificate was granted by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI).

- This certification would provide scope for the higher price of the coffee and pepper.

- On 2,184.76 acres, 1,900 tribal farmers from the Gondupakalu, Lambasingi, and Kappalu clusters in the Chintapalli division cultivate coffee.

5. Goa & Uttarakhand signs MoU to Enhance Tourism


The Government of Goa and the Government of Uttarakhand have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate towards enhancing the tourism landscape of both Goa and Uttarakhand. The MoU was signed in the presence of Rohan Khaunte, Minister for Tourism, IT, E&C, Printing and Stationary of the Government of Goa, and Pushkar Singh Dhami, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

- The MoU aims at promoting bilateral cooperation in the travel and tourism sector and facilitating travel between the states to increase the number of tourists visiting Goa and Uttarakhand respectively.


6. Home Minister Amit Shah lays Foundation Stone of NFSU Assam & launches “Assam Police Seva Setu”


On May 25, 2023, Amit Shah, the Union Minister of Home Affairs (MHA), laid the foundation stone for the Guwahati campus of the National Forensic Science University (NFSU). This campus will be the 11th NFSU campus worldwide and the 10th campus in India.

- During the event, Amit Shah also launched the web portal "Assam Police Seva Setu" to enhance accessibility and transparency in Assam police services for the public. Additionally, he unveiled a book titled "Analysis on Judicial Approach on Forensic Evidence" authored by Dr. J.M Vyas, the vice chancellor of NFSU, which focuses on the use of forensic science in the judiciary.

- The Assam Government has allocated 50 acres of land for the establishment of this Forensic Science University, and the Union government will provide Rs. 500 crore for the education of 3,500 students in undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

- The Guwahati campus, situated in the Changsari suburb of Kamrup's Molong district, will be constructed in two phases. The first phase is scheduled for completion by 2026, followed by the second phase in 2030. The campus will offer over 50 undergraduate, graduate, PhD, and post-doctoral programs in various forensic science disciplines, including wildlife forensics, cyber security, narcotics, digital forensics, drone forensics, forensic psychology, and forensic justice & law. The estimated cost of the campus is Rs. 300 crore.

- Regarding the Assam Police Seva Setu initiative :

It is a digital platform established by the Assam government to facilitate interaction between citizens and law enforcement.

- The portal will be available in both Assamese and Bengali languages.

- Key features of the portal include instant criminal reporting, grievance submission, online registration for senior citizens living alone, verification of candidates for government and private sector jobs, verification of tenants, paying guests, and domestic help, reporting missing persons, child-related issues, and lost and found items, security clearance for commercial constructions and petrol stations, obtaining permissions or No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for fireworks sales and temporary bar licenses, and providing feedback and sharing confidential criminal information.


7. Indian Navy & ISRO Jointly Released ‘Gaganyaan Recovery Training Plan’ at WSTF INS Garuda


On May 24, 2023, the Indian Navy along with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has released a ‘Gaganyaan Recovery Training Plan’ at the state of the art Water Survival Training Facility (WSTF) INS (Indian Naval Ship) Garuda, Kochi.

- The training document was jointly released by Vice Admiral Atul Anand, Director General of Naval Operations, Indian Navy, Dr. Unnikrishnan Nair, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), and Dr. Umamaheshwaran R, Director, Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) of ISRO.

8. IEA’s World Energy Investment 2023: Clean Energy Investment Rises Fasten Than Investment in Fossil Fuels


According to the World Energy Investment 2023 (WEI 2023) report released by the International Energy Agency (IEA), investments in clean energy have surged and now exceed investments in fossil fuels by 70%. When comparing IEA's estimates for 2023 with those from 2021, it is evident that annual investments in clean energy have grown at a faster rate compared to investments in fossil fuels (24% vs 15%).

- Key points from the report include :

(i) The estimated global energy investment for 2023 is around USD 2.8 trillion.

(ii) Of this total, over USD 1.7 trillion will be allocated to clean energy, which encompasses renewable power, nuclear energy, grids, storage, low-emission fuels, efficiency improvement, and electrification. The remaining amount, over USD 1 trillion, will be directed towards investments in fossil fuels. Notably, 15% of the investment in fossil fuels will be allocated to coal.

(iii) The report highlights that for every USD 1 spent on fossil fuels, USD 1.7 will be invested in clean energy. This represents a significant shift from the 1:1 ratio observed in 2018.

(iv) While investments in new coal-fired power plants are declining, investments in coal supply, which have already surpassed pre-pandemic levels, are projected to increase by 10% in 2023. In 2022, the approval of 40 GW of new coal plants was recorded, marking the highest figure since 2016. The report predicts that almost all new coal-fired capacity will be constructed in China.

Overall, the report underscores the significant growth in clean energy investments compared to fossil fuels, with a notable rise in renewable energy sources and a concerning trend of continued investment in coal supply.


9. South Korea launched NEXTSat-2, 1st commercial-grade satellite, aboard Nuri


On May 25, 2023, South Korea successfully launched ‘Next Generation Small Satellite 2(NEXTSat-2), the  first commercial-grade satellite aboard Korean Satellite Launch Vehicle Two (KSLV-II), nicknamed Nuri, from the launch pad at Naro Space Centre in Goheung, South Jeolla Province, South of Seoul, South Korea.

- NEXTSat-2 is the main payload of Nuri, whose mission is to deploy a total of 8 satellites (NEXTSat-2 and 7 small-sized cube satellites (CubeSats)) into a solar synchronous orbit circling the earth at an altitude of 550 kilometres.

- This also marks the 3rd launch of Korea’s domestically developed Nuri rocket.

- Mission of NEXTSat-2: To verify radar imaging technology and observe cosmic radiation in a near-Earth orbit.

10. ISA partnered with AISC for Growth and Sustainability in Steel Sector


On May 21 2023, The Indian Steel Association (ISA), the apex steel industry body and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Iron and Steel Council (AISC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to unlock new avenues of growth and sustainability in steel sector.

- The MoU signed for the bilateral cooperation aims to support the strengths, expertise, and resources of both organisations to unlock new avenues for growth, innovation, and sustainability in the steel industry.

11. 3 Indian peacekeepers honoured with UNs Dag Hammarskjold Medal


On May 25, 2023, three Indian peacekeepers were posthumously awarded the United Nations Dag Hammarskjöld Medal. The recipients of the medal were Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, Head Constables Sanwala Ram Vishnoi and Shishupal Singh, and civilian peacekeeper Shaber Taher Ali.

- Ruchira Kamboj, India's Permanent Ambassador to the UN, received the medals on behalf of the Indian peacekeepers from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

- Here are some details about the three Indian peacekeepers :

(i) Head Constables Shishupal Singh (45) from Rajasthan's Sikar and Sanwala Ram Vishnoi (45) from Barmer, Rajasthan, were part of two BSF platoons deployed for the UN peacekeeping mission in Congo in May 2022. They served in the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO). Tragically, they lost their lives during armed protests in Butembo city, Congo, on July 26, 2023.

(ii) Shaber Taher Ali served in a civilian capacity with the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and was killed on April 17, 2022.

- India has been actively contributing to UN peacekeeping missions since 1950 and has deployed more than 275,000 troops, including a significant number of women peacekeepers, in over 51 missions. The country's commitment to international peacekeeping efforts has been longstanding and commendable.


Economy :


1. SBI’s Ecowrap Report Projects India’s GDP Growth to 5.5% in Q4 FY23 & 7.1% in FY23


According to the Ecowrap report of the State Bank of India (SBI) released on May 26, 2023, India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in the fourth quarter (Q4) of Financial Year 2022-23 (FY23) is projected to be 5.5%. India’s growth for FY23 is projected at 7.1% due to growth in manufacturing sector.

Key notes :

(i) The State Bank of India (SBI) has projected a growth rate of 7% for the fiscal year 2023, aligning with the advance estimates released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) in January 2023. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has estimated the real GDP growth for Q4FY23 to be 5.1%.

(ii) The SBI report highlights that domestic consumption and investment have experienced positive effects due to improved prospects in agricultural and allied activities.

(iii) The GDP growth projection provided by Ecowrap is based on SBI's ANN (Artificial Neural Network) model, which utilizes 30 high-frequency indicators from key sectors. These indicators are fine-tuned and trained to forecast GDP numbers.


2. India to contribute 16% to global GDP growth : Morgan Stanley


According to Morgan Stanley, the Indian economy is a key contributor to Asian economic growth outperformance and India is expected to contribute 16% of the global gross domestic product (GDP) growth over 2023-24.

- The Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI) and manufacturing PMI of India are well above than other economies. 

- The passenger vehicle sales are at 131% of pre-Covid-19 levels, real goods and services tax collections are 35% higher than pre-Covid-19 and services exports have risen by 84% since October 2020.


Banking & Finance :


1. ADB, India signs US$141.12 million Loan Agreement for industrial corridor development in AP


On May 25, 2023, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India signed a US$141.12 million loan agreement to support the development of high-quality internal infrastructure such as roads, water supply systems and electricity distribution network in three industrial clusters in the state of Andhra Pradesh (AP).

- The US$ 141.12 million will be used for the project to build infrastructure in three industrial clusters in the Visakhapatnam and Srikalahasthi-Chittoor nodes in AP.

Key notes :

(i) Under the financing provided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the following industrial infrastructure projects are planned for the Visakhapatnam node :

- Development of internal infrastructure within the startup area of the 160-hectare Rambilli industrial cluster and the 441-hectare Nakkapalli industrial cluster.

- Widening of a 13.8-kilometer stretch of the Atchuthapuram–Anakapalli road and improvement of a 4.4-kilometer access road leading to the Nakkapalli industrial cluster.

(ii) In the Srikalahasthi-Chittoor node, the ADB financing will support the following developments:

- Development of the startup area within the 938-hectare Chittoor–South industrial cluster.

- Improvement of a 9.5-kilometer access road to the Chittoor-South industrial cluster.

- Construction of an 8.7-kilometer access road to the Naidupeta industrial cluster.
